Mumbles Development Trust receives prestigious Community Award
Local community Castle Woods, Mumbles is one of the best in the country
Pupils from all four Infants classes at Oystermouth Primary School celebrated recently as Castle Woods in Mumbles was recognised as one of the best and cleanest community-run green spaces in the country. The Woods is a favourite venue for class story time as well as countless environmental and nature projects for these fortunate local children. Oystermouth pupil, Megan, said: “The Green Flag tells us the Woods is a special place”.

Castle Woods received the Green Flag Community Award, a sign that the site is a well-managed and welcoming place, central to the local community - a high-quality green space in the village.
The Green Flag Award Scheme is managed by a consortium, comprising Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and GreenSpace. Known collectively as the Green Flag Plus Partnership, the consortium manages the scheme in Wales for the Welsh Steering Group.
Robin Bonham, Vice Chairperson of Mumbles Development Trust said: “This is a reward for the hard work our volunteers have put into the site over the last year, making it a valuable community asset.”

Local children help complete new woodland planting
Year 4 children from St David’s Primary School, West Cross, together with green volunteers from the Mumbles Development Trust and the City & Council of Swansea Conservation Department completed planting of a brand new woodland area in Clyne Valley Country Park this November.
This was the third planting event during the past year to be held by MDT to create this new woodland, previous events involving children from both Mayals Primary School and Ysgol Gymraeg Llwynderw. The new woodland is made up of some twelve hundred native saplings, donated by the Woodland Trust and planted under the Better Woodlands Wales scheme.

Over 1,000 registrations were received for community planting packs this autumn and as a result, more than 200,000 free trees will be planted across the UK. Tree packs were provided in partnership with Ibuyeco, one of the UK's leading eco insurance providers who have worked with the Woodland Trust for over two years and have generously raised £300,000 for the charity so far.
Event organiser for MDT, Naomi Trodden, said: “It is a wonderful thought that by the time these young school children are adults, that plateau overlooking Swansea and the bay will be a maturing woodland, providing an environment for all sorts of wildlife, and helping to sustain Clyne Valley Country Park for future generations.”

Green Flag Award Nominations Start Next Week
by Toni Delaney
Mumbles Development Trust will be hoping to make it as back to back winners of the prestigious Green Flag award following this years success at Castle Woods. The community development Trust's excellent environmental arm achieves a lot through its hard work in caring for our community Green spaces and here is just a reminder of the accolade paid to them by the governing body, earlier this year.
Nomination open on 1 November 2011 for the 2011/12 Season
Castle Woods in Mumbles is one of the best community-run green spaces in the country – and that’s official!

Today, Castle Woods will receive the Community Award, a sign that the site is a well- managed and welcoming place, central to the local community. A high-quality green space in the village.
Castle Woods is one of a record number of parks and green spaces receiving the Community Award this year, ensuring that even more of us now have access to well-managed, high-quality green spaces.
In 2011, 1,288 parks and green spaces will fly either the Green Flag or Community Award, a sign that the value of green space is widely acknowledged as vital to our communities.
Robin Bonham, Vice Chairperson of Mumbles Development Trust said:
“This is a reward for the hard work our volunteers have put into the site over the last year, making it a valuable community asset.”

Phil Barton, Green Flag Plus Partnership chairman said: “I would like to congratulate this year’s winners, who have worked hard throughout the year to keep their parks and green spaces at a high standard and ensure they are pleasant and enjoyable spaces for the whole community.
“The Green Flag Award Scheme, and its growth, is essential in driving up the standards of our parks and green spaces. Access to quality green space is something we all desire and the scheme plays a key role in providing it.
“In these challenging financial times it is heartening that the number of Community
Awards continue to grow. As the value of green space and the role it plays in our communities strengthens, we must ensure these high standards remain.”
All award-winning sites now have the chance to receive a further award from the Green Flag Plus Partnership, the People’s Choice Award. This award is voted for by the public, so if you want to see your local park receive a national accolade as the People’s Choice, then visit the Green Flag Award website now to register your vote.

Sapling Planting This March
Children from Year 4 at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llwynderw in West Cross rolled up their sleeves on 14th March to be part of a national tree planting movement to double the number of native trees and woods in the UK, by planting free trees from the Woodland Trust.
The school pupils and their class teacher Mr Stevens and helpers, together with the Trust's green volunteers, took up their spades with energy and enthusiasm on a bright sunny spring morning in Clyne Valley Country Park.
The planting of 420 native saplings in the Park was part of the Better Woodland Wales grant, recognising the benefits native trees bring to our wildlife, neighbourhoods and communities. Sean Hathaway, for the City & Council of Swansea Conservation department, guided the group to the selected planting site and demonstrated correct planting methods.
Mumbles Development Trust event organiser, Naomi Trodden, said: "Tree planting is a brilliant way for us to do something lasting in our local Mumbles area. We hope our trees will help increase biodiversity and make a real difference to everyone who will see them. It's wonderful to think that in just 5 years the saplings we planted together will create a small woodland of trees as tall as our young volunteers from Ysgol Llwynderw!"

Volunteering With Woodland Projects
Broadleaf Woodland Enterprise is a social enterprise, which grew out of a successful programme of environmental improvement activities undertaken by Mumbles Development Trust, with the support and involvement of the community since 2000.
Known as the ‘Mumbles Green Action Team’, the Trust’s environmental work has substantially improved community awareness of the importance of, and access to, the green space of Mumbles.
Over the years, this work has been funded piecemeal each year by: The Gower Society, Environment Wales, Keep Wales Tidy, The Heritage Lottery, Cydcoed Phase I, and the help and support of the City and County of Swansea.
As a volunteer with either the Broadleaf Woodland Enterprise or Mumbles Green Action team you can get out there and enjoy the open air through talking part in activities such as Beach Cleaning and Woodland Tree Planting to getting involved further with biodiversity management. Both projects offer a lot more volunteer opportunities than those mentioned and we also offer free ‘workshops’ and training in Woodland Management and other areas.
If you see yourself as an environmental volunteer we would love to meet you at the MDT headquarters in Dunns Lane for an informal chat. You can ring us for further information or visit our website pages at http://mumblesdevelopmenttrust.org

Mumbles Development Trust, with help from Cydcoed, have been enhancing a series of woodlands extending from Mumbles Hill to Clyne Valley, since 2005.
Sites within the scope of the Mumbles Cydcoed Woodlands project are linked, by a 10km route called The Mumbles Way Walk, which was first walked by the public on 12/6/07 as part of the Gower Walking Festival, before an official opening by Iolo Williams on 17/9/07.
This and other shorter walks in the local area, have been created and developed by Neil Thomas, a Mumbles Green Action Team volunteer. Mumbles Development Trust has been awarded a grant by Environment Wales to develop these walks with signage and literature ..
The Mumbles Way Leaflet is available from the Mumbles Development Trust and the Mumbles Tourist Information Centre priced at just £1
